We’ll get this over and done with nice and early.
The reason this blogs called ‘It must be built’, is because of my interest in Factory Records and The Haçienda nightclub. Tony Wilson, the joint founder of Factory, took the name from a slogan of the radical group Situationist International: “The Haçienda Must Be Built”, from ‘Formulary for a New Urbanism’ by Ivan Chtcheglov.
I’m not going to bore you with the story of Factory Records, there are plenty of great sites and a BBC documentary for you to go check out if you’re not already up to speed.
Manchester and the North of England came out of the dark, Factory became possibly the most influential label in the UK, Joy Division were formed, the Haçienda was built, the Haçienda closes and is turned into apartments, Wilson dies of cancer, the rebirth…..
It’s just a shame that in the past few years, Factory & The Haçienda have become bywords for cashing in and making a few quid.
For me ‘It must be built’ stands for trying to do something differently, building something better or making people look at things another way. Whether I’ll succeed in any of these aims we’ll see, at least there’s still some time before the final whistle.
